Whoa...something went wrong there...That didn't work out so well...let's try again.

It was only a matter of time before someone found a way to exploit the Twitter's new URL-shortening services, which are being used by thousands of websites to facilitate easier sharing of links through the social networking site.  Though there are certainly no shortage of legitimate uses for these tools, it took hackers less than four seconds to find an illicit one.  On Friday, the day after Twitter launched its own t .co link-shrinking tool, another outfit called Bitly—which claims 2 million users and recently struck a deal with Google—caught an attempt to create a spammy bookmarklet that would force***Whenever

I have a lengthy article to post somewhere, for example on a forum or in a blog comment, I usually shorten it first. Shortened links are useful while writing too because the shortened links take up less space and don't break words that should fit into a certain line length.

The problem is that most services that shortens URLs often cut off some characters from the end of destination URL. This makes no sense to me why they would do it - If someone actually copy-pastes or shares such link, there's nothing to worry about since they will get 404 page not found error which doesn't contain any sensitive information

On the other hand if you're going to open such link yourself it may be rather annoying when something important gets cut off. If it's really long article or something which you will want to share later on every platform possible, every character counts.

Also some services attempt to track you by adding tracking code to shortened URLs they shorten - That is not my concern here but it may be yours so you should avoid using such services if that bothers you too. If not then don't mind that part of the text and feel free to read further.

First of all I would like to mention two sites where I've been using for shortening URLs for years now without any issues:

duckduckgo  - This one doesn't require registration at all, just paste your URL there and click shorten URL, done. An advantage here is also that this service doesn't load anything or try to track you.

tinyurl  - If for any reason you don't like duckduckgo, use TinyURL instead which has many advantages as well such as: free (but not anonymous) and it loads faster than other similar services. Also here there's no registration required and URLs can be up to 253 characters long which should suffice for every situation.

If those two options still bother you somehow then keep on reading. I guess if someone is using Linux and the command line regularly then they will know how to do what I'm going to mention next even without further explanation. For others that aren't familiar with the basics of unix then read on:

So we need a shortener that doesn't shorten URLs (if that makes sense?) Well there are probably hundreds of them out there but the one I use is x.x.me

Basically it works in the same way as other similar services but with two different twists: - The resulting link doesn't contain any characters at all, only dots!  - The destination URL can be up to 72 characters long which means that you can put almost anything you want into x.x.me and still get shortened result which should work without problems when posting it anywhere because nobody will see what's behind those dots...

But wait, why 72? Why not unlimited length like some other shorteners do? Well, when you use certain web browser or operating system then sometimes things break badly when URLs are too long. For example when you login to your server via SSH web console, or try to open URL that is too long with firefox then there's a chance that something will break badly and nothing will happen at all - The browser doesn't load the page neither shows 404 page not found error like it should.

Anyway if x.x.me isn't good enough for you then read on how I prepared my own small script which does the same thing without requiring any dependencies so it'll work in even more environments than x.x.me or similar services do:

So here's the source code  for my shorturl bash script which does exactly what's needed - Paste any lengthy article URL inside the script and run it as follows:

#!/bin/bash URL=$1 if [[ -z $URL ]]; then echo "Please provide URL as argument." exit 1 fi wget -qO- https://x.x.me/?url=${URL} | sed 's/.*\///g' | tr -d '

Remaining characters:  $(( $(wc - c) ))

Which of the two services do you prefer, duckduckgo or tinyurl? Please let me know in comments below, thank you! In case the article was helpful to you please share it on social networks so others can read it as well and I'll be happy :) That is all for now folks, have a nice day and happy coding!
