Use meaningful and relevant keywords in URL’s

As a SEO professional, I receive many questions from website owners asking for advice about what they can do to improve their search engine rankings. The most common topics discussed with the client are site optimization and link building . One of the most important elements in a website is its URLs. Since they help a user identify a webpage’s content , it is also useful to think about including keywords in URL’s. Having keywords in all your page URLs will make it easier for users to find your site through search engines.

Secondly, URL’s with words provide better branding than url’s without words. A company's brand name should be included in all areas of the web including web pages' titles, meta description, image attributes and URL’s. This is because people who see the name used more often are likely to remember it better, and be positively inclined towards it.

When trying to figure out what keywords you want to include in your URL, there are several things that should be taken into consideration such as :

1- The best keyword density of a webpage is between 3%-8%.

2- A keyword can be repeated multiple times within one web page's url if its part of the product/service offered on that specific web page. For example:

3 –  A keyword shouldn’t be repeated in multiple web page URLs.

4- Your website must be hosted on a server that has the keywords in the domain's name (i.e

5- A keyword shouldn’t be used in a short and meaningless web page URL (ex: Any word or words can be put in front of "Best LED Flashlights" to make it more relevant and helpful for users, such as “reviews”, “best” , etc…

6- Make your website easy to remember by choosing meaningful and relevant keywords for your site .

7- A good practice is counting the number of URL’s you have and dividing it by 3. This will give you an idea of how many keywords should be included in each url.

8- It is also good to remember that search engines usually pick up the keyword that occurs most frequently within a webpage, so you should try to include your targeted keyword in page URLs which are most relevant to the product/service being offered on these web pages.

As I mentioned earlier, using meaningful and relevant words in website URL's makes them easier for users to identify because they act as indicators about what could be their contents (article background information). Additionally, when people see brand name more often, they're likely to remember it better thus leading them to associate themselves with it. Having said this, people's first reaction to is that it must be about Thomas Ballinger and led flashlights because all the words involved in the URL are easy to recognize and they directly suggest what contents could be found on the site.
