So you want to run your own URL shortener, eh?

Well, you've come to the right place. YOURLS is a set of PHP script that will allow you to do just that. In case you're not familiar with how a URL shortener works, here's a quick rundown: when somebody goes from https://yourls.org/somerandomword or https://yoursite.com/somerandomword , they get forwarded to somerandomword.com .

When somebody clicks on a shortened link, they might be presented with some ad-filled page full of popups and whatnot - it's the price we pay for free services like TinyURL or bitly (which is very similar in purpose to THIS one).

YOURLS is different: it's free and open source, and provides a whole bunch of features. You can make it private or public (pro accounts), add an API, integrate with WordPress through a plugin... you get the point by now. It's not another web service run by some random company; YOURLS is decentralized, which means no ads, no tracking and no popups to deal with. It also comes packed with sweet stats and analytics that rival any other similar URL shortener out there. Free software FTW! If you're still not convinced yourls is for you , check out the Resources page . There you'll find links to tutorials on how YOURLS works and what its possibilities are if you don't know how to use it yet.

Users and Site Stats Yourls provides a number of stats that let you check on the usage of your service: Traffic - this is an overview of your activity in the last 30 days, with breakdowns for visits, mobile devices (if tracked) and countries;

Average visit time - shows how long users stay on the site (in minutes);

Unique visitors per day - like any self-respecting stat, people like to track their hits;

Returning visitors percentage - people who've visited once vs. regular customers;

Top referrers & browsers - raw data about where and in what browser most visitors come from (can help in optimizing ad placement);

Usability: Bounce rate and pages per visit - the percentage of unique visitors that came once and didn't come back, and how many pages they viewed on average when they did

(a high bounce rate is usually a sign that your site isn't engaging or doesn't provide any additional information to what's already in the link);

Top referrers & searches - the top search terms used when people land on your URLs via web search engines (can give you ideas for content);

Last visited URLs Most recently visited URLs are also logged in case they were bookmarked or emailed by users. You can access them from YOURLS' stats menu . They're not available in real time because this would use up quite some bandwidth; last visited urls are refreshed daily.

What is a URL shortener?

A "URL shortener" is a website that takes long URLs and squeezes them into fewer characters to make sharing easier. Many services provide this as a free service, but there are also paid alternatives where you can set up your own custom link. In addition to making links shorter, some URL shorteners offer tracking analytics as another feature. Popular examples of these include bitly and goo.gl .
